Emotional Support Animal Letters

Therapy that meets you where you are—literally and emotionally.

ESA Letters

Supporting your need for comfort and companionship.

At Brighter Paths Counseling & Wellness, we provide Emotional Support Animal (ESA) letters to qualified clients who benefit from the comfort and support of an emotional support animal. If you experience anxiety, depression, PTSD, or other mental health conditions that impact your daily life, an ESA can offer meaningful relief.

What is an ESA Letter?

An ESA letter is a formal document written by a licensed mental health professional that verifies your need for an emotional support animal as part of your mental health treatment. This letter can help you secure reasonable accommodations under federal laws—such as housing protections under the Fair Housing Act—which allow your ESA to live with you even in no-pet housing.

Unlike service animals, ESAs do not have public access rights but provide emotional comfort and support within your home environment.

Who Qualifies for an ESA Letter?

An ESA letter is appropriate for individuals diagnosed with a mental health condition that substantially limits major life activities and for whom the presence of an emotional support animal provides therapeutic benefit.

Common qualifying conditions include:

  • Anxiety disorders

  • Depression

  • Post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)

  • Panic disorders

  • Chronic stress or other emotional disabilities

During your evaluation, we’ll discuss your mental health history, current symptoms, and how an ESA may support your wellbeing.

How We Help

To begin, you’ll have a focused 30-minute session with a licensed therapist who will carefully assess your mental health needs and explore whether an emotional support animal is a suitable part of your overall treatment plan. This is a collaborative process where your therapist listens to your experiences and helps determine if an ESA can provide meaningful relief.

If appropriate, we provide a clear, professionally written ESA letter that outlines your need for the support animal in a way that meets legal and clinical standards. Beyond the letter itself, we aim to empower you with information about your rights and how to navigate common challenges when requesting accommodations.

Our therapists prioritize ethical practice, ensuring that every ESA letter is grounded in genuine clinical need—not convenience—so your support animal can truly help enhance your emotional wellbeing. We’re also available to answer any questions you may have throughout the process, helping you feel confident in using your ESA letter effectively.

Important Considerations

  • ESA letters are not a “quick fix” or casual pet registration—they require a legitimate mental health evaluation.

  • ESAs do not have public access rights like service animals and are primarily for housing and air travel accommodations.

  • Airlines and housing providers may have their own specific requirements—always verify policies before traveling or signing leases.

  • An ESA letter is typically valid for one year and may require renewal based on your ongoing mental health needs.

Service Details & Pricing

Our ESA letter service includes a 30-minute assessment with a licensed therapist to evaluate your mental health needs and determine eligibility for an Emotional Support Animal letter. The cost for this service is $200, payable at the time of the appointment.

If you qualify, your ESA letter will be prepared and delivered within 1–2 business days following your assessment. This letter will meet all legal requirements for housing and travel accommodations.

We strive to provide clear, professional, and timely support to help you access the comfort an ESA can offer.
